Parents Google Your School Before They Visit. What Do They Find?

A parent in Lagos is choosing a school for their child. Before they visit, call, or ask a neighbour, they pick up their phone and search.
What they find in the next two minutes decides whether your school gets a visit or gets skipped.
The new front door is a search result
For years, a school’s reputation travelled by word of mouth. That still matters, but it now gets checked online. A parent who hears good things about your school will search your name to confirm it. A parent who has never heard of you will search “best private school near me” and choose from what appears.
Either way, your digital presence is the first impression, and many schools don’t know what it looks like.
What parents notice
Parents rarely say it out loud, but they judge quickly. A website with old photos, broken pages, or a 2019 admission notice suggests the school isn’t paying attention. A missing or incorrect Google listing creates friction before a call is even made. An inactive social media page raises questions about whether the school is still active. Unanswered messages tell a parent the school is not responsive.
None of these say anything about your teaching. But they shape the decision before a parent has seen a classroom.
Four fixes you can make this term
Claim and correct your Google Business Profile. It is free and takes an afternoon. Make sure your name, address, phone number, and opening hours are right, and add real photos of your campus.
Ask satisfied parents for reviews. A handful of honest reviews carries more weight than any advert. Make asking a routine step at the end of each term.
Put one clear page on your website for admissions. Fees structure, how to apply, key dates, and a contact button. Parents should find these in seconds without calling.
Post consistently, not constantly. Two or three posts a week showing real school life — events, achievements, and classroom moments — builds trust better than occasional bursts.
Why this works
Schools that are easy to find and easy to understand lose fewer enquiries to competitors. Parents don’t need a flashy brand. They need clear, current information and a sense that someone is paying attention.
